Artist Statement
Lina Montoya is a Jicarilla Apache 2-D mixed media artist that is based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The subject matter of Montoya’s art is heavily influenced by the people around her and her experiences; they explore ideas like identity, family, and relationships. Her illustrations use paint, pencils, and markers to create pieces that are vibrant, whimsical, as well as diverse for each relationship in her life. Montoya’s artistic style is inspired by the Japanese manga and anime she consumed growing up. This style of aesthetics is versatile enough to depict a range of subject matter for each piece. The variety of mediums also gives a distinct impact on the viewer’s experience from one artwork to another. The artist states: “In a world of turmoil and commotion, I want my pieces to make people smile and laugh to ease their troubles.”
