Artist Statement
My name is Lina Montoya, I am a Painter and Illustrator who is of Jicarilla Apache and Navajo descent. My body of work combines the style of Japanese Anime and Manga from my childhood with my experience as a Native American woman. This practice allows me to create pieces that explore concepts like family, friendship, identity and storytelling; that aim to create a unique modern lens with which to view Native American art with.
With this framework I produce animal portraits, comics, and whimsical illustrations that are meant to capture the likeness of people around me as well as my experiences. The materials I use allow me easy access to make works of art that align with my goal as an artist.
